Given the country’s growing senior population, Stages Yoga has identified an
opportunity to provide superior yoga classes for seniors, specifically, but not limited to,
Chair Yoga with modified weight-bearing postures.
Stages Yoga will come to your independent or assisted living residence, skilled nursing
facility, hospital, community center, private residencce or place of worship and carefully
evaluate the group or individual interested in our program. Our first complimentary class
will give us a great deal of information about the population at hand. We will work
through some basic chair poses and stretches and we will also engage in an open
discussion with the participants about some of the benefits they might begin to reap with
an ongoing yoga class, what their expectations might be, their experience with physical
activity, their personal health issues or concerns and other questions.
The goal of Stages’ yoga program is to keep older people independent for as long as
possible, and with regular yoga practice, it is possible!! NO KIDDING!
Yoga is body honoring and non competitive. All yoga poses can be modified from
advanced to beginner.
According to the American College of Sports Medicine,
a regular yoga program benefits:
Muscular Strength and Endurance
Joint Flexibility
Ease of Movement
Balance
Increased Breathing Ease and Capacity
Improvement in Foot Health
Reduction in Blood Pressure
Improved Circulation
Marked Improvement in Upper Extremity functional performance
Improvement in Digestive and Elimination Systems
Reduced Anxiety and Feelings of Loneliness
Renewed Interest in Life
In each Chair Yoga class with modified weight bearing postures, the instructor will move
through a sequence of poses that addresses the specific issues outlined in the previous
page. Chest expansions are especially important for this population, as opening up the
chest significantly increases circulation to all the vital organs in the thoracic cavity. Good
posture promotes overall health in general because enough oxygen is consumed and
processed.
Overall strength training, balancing work, and postures to increase range of mobility will
be included in each class, in addition to relaxation exercises.
Many seniors desire the social interaction a group exercise format provides. Yoga is
especially inviting as we discuss some of the other tenets at the core of yogic philosophy
such as non-judgment of self and others; compassion for all living things; and gratitude
for the moment. Our final relaxation pose is especially restorative and calming for
participants.

"Every week, I look forward to Rossana's class.
She explains in detail how everything we are doing
is benefitting us. I love that."
