Our programs for special needs children are generally 30-45 minutes long and are also
conducted at your facility or home. We will work with groups and individuals. Some our of
special needs programs are also combined with visual arts and music. At the intital meeting,
we will determine the most appropriate format for the group or individual.
Since yoga is not a gym class, with children competing against each other, they generally
don’t have preconceived notions of the way things are supposed to be happening.
The classes tend to be very small and all the postures are designed so everyone in the class
can do them. Because of yoga’s body honoring philosophy and non competitive nature, the
classes are more about working in harmony with our bodies and each other.
We learn the names of different postures, and the children love and remember them
because they’re mostly based on the names of animals and flowers! We growl like lions,
hiss like snakes, purr like cats, moo like cows and sprout up like seeds transforming into
sunflowers and daffodils! We learn to calm our minds and bodies with deep, mindful
breath work. We do final relaxation after our invigorating yoga classes, with the children
lying on their mats and the instructors gently massaging their feet or legs, as the children
want or need.
We’ll introduce them to some of the most interesting animal yoga poses, some breathing
techniques to help with stress and anxiety and we’ll provide the parents with some useful
tips to help calm their children during challenging times as well as some stress relieving
breathing and stretching tips for the parents and caregivers.
Stages will also provide information on how we can be contacted if anyone is interested in
learning more about our work with special needs populations.

Listen to the shouldn'ts, the
impossibles, the won'ts. Listen to the
never haves, then listen close to me...
Anything can happen, child.
Anything can be."
