Welcome to the Clay Project!
First and foremost, I would like to thank my dear friend Colleen Fitzpatrick who
came up with the name and concept for the Clay Project. Her hard work and
compassion with the elderly is inspiring, and humbling. Thanks, Colleen.
This is a new and very special program we've recently started doing both on site
and off site! Clay is considered to be one of the most calming, inspiring and
peaceful forms of art. It's also one of humanity's oldest and most enduring. The
Clay Project mission was formed as a response to inquiries about what types of
arts services we could provide that could be done by those who are intimidated
by drawing and painting and sadly, shun art because they feel they can't draw or
paint realistically. It's a well know fact that art can be extremely
therapeutic...but not if the task at hand is daunting!
Clay is a wonderful, tactile medium in which all of us can feel successful. Clay
can be gently molded into our heart's desire ... whether it be a bowl, an animal, a
flower, a wall hanging or even a pendant to wear. The possibilites are endless. In
working with clay, our clients often lose themselves in their work, children as
well as adults, and for a brief time, forgo their worries and stresses and gain a
rewarding sense of accomplishment.
First, we shape our wet clay into our projects and then glaze them. Two weeks
later, or sometimes a little longer, depending on how fast the clay dries, we fire
the pieces. When we bring them back to our students and they see the end
result, the element of surprise (and the sheer explosion of smiles everywhere in
the room) is amazing.
We only work with porcelain, which is very gentle on the hands. Porcelain, once
fired in our studio kilns, has a light, almost transparent quality which gives the
end product even more charm.
We have many options available...monthly in-service, weekly workshops, day
projects, and more. Again, as with our yoga services, we work with all special
needs populations, adults and children. Give us a call to see how we can work
together on "The Clay Project!"

“Clay. It's rain, dead leaves, dust, all my dead
ancestors. Stones that have been ground into sand.
Mud. The whole cycle of life and death.”
Martine Vermeulen (Artist from Nova Scotia)
“You cannot help but learn more as you take the
world into your hands. Take it up reverently, for it
is an old piece of clay, with millions of
thumbprints on it.”
John Updike (American writer, b.1932)
